Assistant Professor - Jewish History/Jewish Studies **FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT** Brooklyn College of the City University of New York (CUNY) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Department of Judaic Studies with a teaching and research focus in Jewish history and culture in global perspective. We will consider expertise in areas such as eastern Europe and Yiddish-speaking diaspora communities or Sephardic Jewry in the Middle East, North Africa, the Mediterranean, the Balkans, and their diasporas. The successful candidate will demonstrate innovative methodologies in their teaching and research that may include migration and diaspora studies, comparative religion and religious pluralisms, evolution of Jewish law, critical engagement with antisemitism and related forms of prejudice, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, memory, media and/or literary studies, Jewish customs and material culture, and transnational perspectives situating Jewish history, Judaism, and identities within their broader local and global contexts. Depending on area of focus, ability to teach Hebrew or Yiddish language and literature are welcome but not required as well as courses on the Holocaust, antisemitism, and Jewish diaspora. Founded in 1970, the Judaic Studies Department offers majors and minors in Judaic Studies, a minor in Global Studies, a minor in Hebrew, and concentration tracks in Judaic Studies for education majors in early childhood education (birth-grade 2) and childhood education (grades 1-6). The department also houses the Hebrew and Yiddish language programs with a full range of elementary and advanced courses. We seek an innovative colleague with a passion for undergraduate teaching who will bring new energy and ideas to the department. As a tenure-track faculty member, the successful candidate's duties will include undergraduate teaching, advising, student outreach, and curriculum development. In addition to maintaining an active research portfolio, the candidate will participate in committee service to the department, college, and university. Brooklyn College is also prioritizing career-connected learning and serving non-traditional student populations, ranging from dual enrollment high schools to returning students. Applicants should share ideas for dynamic new courses appealing to a diverse student body pursuing varied interests and degrees. These should enrich understanding of Jewish experiences while demonstrating the field's relevance to the humanities and beyond the classroom. Candidates should also articulate a vision and strategies to prepare majors and minors for career paths that might include Jewish education, social work, philanthropy, museum and archives, city agencies, or other areas. Candidates with demonstrated knowledge of pedagogy and interest in developing curricula to train Jewish educators are encouraged to speak to that experience. Teach foundational as well as advanced courses in Jewish Studies and in their area of specialization at the BA and MA levels. 2. Teach courses that are part of CUNY's Pathways general education curriculum ( ). **QUALIFICATIONS** **Minimum** + Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in Jewish Studies or related field by the time of appointment from an accredited institution + Ability to teach undergraduate or graduate courses is required + Ability to teach evening, face-to-face, and online **Preferred** + Evidence of excellence in undergraduate teaching (whether as primary instructor or teaching assistant) + Experience creating/revising curricula, organizing academic programs + Fluency in relevant research languages + An active research agenda + Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with students from diverse, minoritized, and marginalized communities + Potential for excellence in teaching, including online teaching, and in scholarship Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
