Project Overview:

Thacker Pass is the largest known lithium resource in the United States. Once complete, the mine and processing facilities will produce more lithium carbonate than any other facility in the United States by far – enough to power 1 million electric vehicles per year.

As the EPCM contractor for Lithium Americas, Bechtel is responsible for managing and integrating the efforts of a team contractors engineering and building the facility. We are also managing procurement of about $1 Billion in goods and services.

Earth work began in 2023 and design and procurement of long-lead equipment is underway.

The project is located in the high desert and wide-open spaces of north-central Nevada about 25 miles from the Oregon border, 1 hour northwest of Winnemucca, Nevada and 3 hours northeast of Reno.

Planned with sustainability and the environment in mind, the facility will use its excess process heat to generate electricity and will recycle process water up to seven times. Once the second phase of the project is complete, Thacker Pass will produce more than 16 times the current U.S. output of lithium.

Job Summary:

In this role, you will participate in the design, development, modification, and evaluation of civil/structural components and processes. You will assist with preparation of construction drawings, project schedules, models, calculations, material requisitions, studies, reports, presentations, and proposals. Your assistance will contribute to civil/structural designs that meet project requirements. #LI-SM2

"This position is designated as part-time telework per our global telework policy and may require at least three days of in-person attendance per week at the assigned office or project. Weekly in-person schedules will be determined by the individual and their supervisor, in consultation with functional or project leadership."

Major Responsibilities:

• Responsible for preparing structural reports, calculations and drawings for permit submission, ensuring that the quality is as per county's requirements. 
• Review permit comments and coordinate with other discipline to put together a satisfactory response to county's permitting committee.  
• Ensuring that proper CSA engineering codes used in the design are provided in the project document submission.
• Plans civil/structural layout, prepares detailed civil/structural design and layout drawings for small structures, portions of major buildings, roadways, railroads, etc.  Ensures designs are compliant with local and national regulations before and during construction 
• Designs structures using knowledge of structural analysis and materials engineering 
• Determines the appropriate use of various structural elements such as steel, wood, masonry, and concrete to ensure appropriate material is used based on load or stress requirements 
• Prepares building material interface details for review by senior personnel 
• Participates in reviews and recommends approval of design drawings and data for compliance with requirements 
• Prepares civil/structural designs and construction drawings using 2-D / 3-D computer aided design (CAD), presentation graphics and civil models and codes 
• Provides technical assistance to other Civil/Structural personnel and interacts with project functions, the customer, and regulatory agency personnel in the resolution of complex regulatory issues and industry codes and standards​ 

Education and Experience Requirements:

• Requires a bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 2-5 years of relevant experience or 6-9 years of relevant work experience

Required Knowledge and Skills:

• Knowledge in structural design and analysis.  
• Experience with IBC, ASCE, AISC, and other structural engineering codes.  
• Experience in steel and concrete calculations, specifications and project design criteria.
